One of the goals of the Woodbury Crime Prevention & Public Safety Board is to provide financial support for the Public Safety Department by purchasing items they would otherwise not be able to obtain due to budgetary constraints. Portable Extinguisher Trainer Portable Extinguisher Trainers provide employees the opportunity to learn how to safely and effectively operate a fire extinguisher in realistic scenarios in a safe controlled environment. The “Sim Man” simulates many medical situations requiring emergency response in non-hospital settings.
LUCAS Chest Compression Systems During 2008, the Board purchased three of these systems for use on our ambulances. The LUCAS Chest compression system doesn't replace paramedics, it enhances their care for the patient. Since LUCAS limits rescuer fatigue and consistently performs compressions, the responder is free to provide medication, defibrillation, or ventilation. Cardiac Monitor Using Board funds, the city of Woodbury obtained a new portable EKG machine. This is no ordinary EKG monitor; it is able to take a complete look at the heart (12-lead) and will help paramedics determine if the patient needs specific medical treatment. This device is crucial for helping those patients who meet certain criterias of receiving definitive care in the event of a heart attack. In addition, the device is able to monitor blood pressure, oxygen saturation levels and more. K9 Officers Using Board funds, the city of Woodbury obtained and trained two K9 officers: Andy (2001) and Shadow (2002). The Board also assisted in funding narcotics training for both K9's in 2002 and 2003. The Board has committed funding towards the purchase and training of two replacement K9's, as Andy and Shadow are entering their retirement years. In 2008, the Board purchased two new K-9's to replace the retired Andy and Shadow (pictured below). The new K-9's are named Niko and Levi.
Thermal Imaging The Board purchased four thermal imaging cameras for use on fire trucks at each of the four Woodbury Fire Stations: Thames, Upper Afton Road, Radio Drive and Fox Run. Thermal imaging cameras work by enabling firefighters to "see" heat, which helps to reveal unconscious victims in smoke-filled rooms, or hidden fires behind walls and ceilings. Thermal imaging cameras will help reduce firefighter injuries and deaths, save civilian lives and dramatically cut down on property damage. Fire Arms Training Simulator The Fire Arms Training Simulator (F.A.T.S.) helps to deliver realistic firearms training to officers in a controlled environment. Specific uses include lethal force decision making, tactical training, marksmanship training and qualification course requirements. Hydraulic Rescue Tools In 2005, the Board purchased three handheld hydraulic rescue tools for the Fire Department. These tools are intended to be used by the first vehicle on the scene of an accident. Training Equipment The Board has purchased several pieces of electronic equipment for use in training Public Safety personnel, including a computer, television and overhead projector. |
